How to cite

Continued support for obs4MIPs datasets depends on demonstrating impact to the modeling and model analysis community.  Here, we provide guidance and recommendations on how to "acknolwedge" datasets and/or the overall obs4MIPs activity in the Acknowledgements section of a publication as well as how to cite/reference datasets or the overall obs4MIPs activity in the body of the publication.

Acknowledgements Section of a Publication

We request that you include the following acknowledgement in any publication that results from your use of datasets obtained via obs4MIPs:

Acknowledging One or More obs4MIPs Datasets

Single Dataset:

The <name of dataset>[a] dataset used in this work was obtained from the obs4MIPs[x] project hosted on the Earth System Grid Federation[y].

Multiple Datasets:

Several datasets[a,b,…] used in this work were obtained from the obs4MIPs[x] project hosted on the Earth System Grid Federation[y].

With the following references or footnotes:

Additionally, each dataset provider may have included requested acknowledgement language in the accompanying technical note. Each specific acknowledgement should also be included as well.

Acknowledging the Overall obs4MIPs Activity

Please use the following language as guidance.  "...like to acknowledge the obs4MIPs activity, a project initiated by the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA)  and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), with governance provided by the World Climate Research Program's (WCRP) Data Advisory Council (WDAC)".

Citing/Referencing One or More obs4MIPs Datasets

The recommended references for a given obs4MIPs dataset are provided in the dataset's accompanying Technical Note.

Citing/Referencing the Overall obs4MIPs Activity

For the most up to date and complete reference information, please cite the obs4MIPs website - https://esgf-node.llnl.gov/projects/obs4mips/ - if the publication allows.  If not, or in addition, the following references are recommended:
